The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) was founded in 1925 as a political legacy of Germany's first democratically elected president, Friedrich Ebert.

The Social Democrat Friedrich Ebert - from simple craftsmen ascended to the highest office - suggested in the light of their own experience in the political debate on the establishment of a foundation with the following objectives:

  • to promote political and social education of individuals from all walks of life in the spirit of democracy and pluralism,
  • to enable talented young people, regardless of the material resources of the parents through grants access to higher education,
  • to international understanding and cooperation.
